GENERAL FEATURES OF INFLAMMATION

By definition inflammation can be said as a natural response of the body that occurs when any vascularised tissues of the body get infected with microbes or there is a part of tissue that is experiencing any damage mostly necrosis.

Does it mean that inflammation is a good thing for our body?

If inflammation is a natural response to infection then why do we have anti-inflammatory drugs?

Well to discuss or to know answers to these questions we have to know how an inflammatory response is triggered in our body.

What are the steps that occur during the process?

Commonly in lay and sometimes in medical terms to inflammation is deemed as a harmful reaction in the body but actually, it is a protective process that definitely has some risk in some individuals. The inflammatory process in our body actually helps to get rid of the microbes that might invade the tissues and it also helps to get rid of the necrotic tissues that might have appeared due to the infection or any other reason.

What part of the body takes part in the process of inflammation when there is a microbe infection?

Naturally, our body has defense mediators that are present in the blood and they are sequestered so they don’t do any damage to normal tissues, they are- pathocytic leukocytes, cytokines, and proteins of the complement system and similarly, there are cells in tissues like macrophages that are in a lookout for invaders.

How does the process of inflammation start?

When there is an invasion of microbe or any kind of change in any part of the tissue in our body like necrosis the macrophages present in the tissue gets activated and thus activates the mediators which recruit the leukocytes and plasma proteins. Which then functions to kill the microbe or remove the unwanted substance. After the inflammation, there is the repair of the tissue that underwent this process.

Then, what is the significance of inflammation, and why it is harmful in some cases?

Well if there was no process of inflammation in our body the infections done by microbes would go unnoticed and would cause much more damage, wounds would never heal as no inflammation would occur during changes in any tissue and it might become dangerous at some point. On the downside, depending on the individual the inflammation might trigger some autoimmune pathways which can be dangerous like hypersensitivity, etc.

Conclusion

Inflammation is the first line process that occurs during an infection or tissue damage and helps the body fight many infections. It can also be harmful in some cases like autoimmune diseases and hypersensitivity where should go see a doctor and might get some anti-inflammatory medicine

P.S stay healthy and safe and be informed. More on inflammation soon  J
